Ask 10 seasoned stoners to rank their favorite concentrates and we’re sure that crumble wax will be in everyone’s top five.

That’s because crumble wax is easy to use and, depending on whether it’s high THC or high CBD, packs a substantial psychedelic or medicinal punch.

But what exactly is crumble wax, and why is it so awesome?

In this article, the all-things-cannabis experts at Honest Marijuana answer those questions and tell you everything you need to know to decide if it’s right for you.

What Is Crumble Wax?

Crumble wax is a cannabis concentrate made by soaking marijuana flowers in a solvent. The solvent removes the cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant matter and holds it in solution (fancy speak for “in a dissolved state” — like Kool-Aid).

As the solvent evaporates, it leaves behind an oily substance that you can then manipulate to produce different forms and consistencies, including:

Honeycomb wax
Cannabis Oil (a.k.a. Rick Simpson Oil)
Hash Oil
Vape juice
Liquid THC
Honey oil (not to be confused with cannabis-infused honey)

That’s a lot! And you can add crumble wax to that list, too.

But don’t feel like you have to memorize what each one is and does. Cannaculture lumps these products together under the name “concentrates” or “extracts,” and they’re pretty much just different types of the same thing.

Crumble wax gets its name from the consistency of the final product, which looks and feels like something somewhere between peanut butter and brown sugar — it’s a little bit sticky, but it will crumble when you handle it.

Hence the name! Brilliant, right?

What Is BHO Crumble Wax?

Whether you’re new to the cannabis game or a stoner of yore, you’ve probably heard about butane hash oil (BHO), butane wax, butane budder, or butane <insert word here>.

You may have even heard about or seen BHO crumble wax. What’s up with that?

BHO is the term experienced cannaenthusiasts use to refer to ALL concentrates made using butane extraction. Think of it as the umbrella term for a large variety of products.

Underneath BHO are the different forms the concentrate can take, like wax, honeycomb, and shatter.

So if you list the terms we’ve talked about from most general to most specific, it would look like this:

Concentrate (general term for solvent-extracted oil)
Butane hash oil (refers to the method by which it was produced)
Budder, wax, shatter (refers to the appearance of the final product)

Most professional outfits that produce concentrates for sale use butane as their solvent of choice.

Now, before you dash out to buy all the butane you can get your hands on to produce your own extracts, it’s essential that you understand something: Butane is highly flammable and can explode (yes, explode!) with the smallest spark.

Even a slight static discharge between your finger and a hard surface is enough to ignite butane fumes in an unventilated room.

No one likes explosions where they live, so we don’t recommend using butane extraction to make your crumble wax. Just leave it to the professionals and their fancy — and safe — equipment.

Thankfully, there are other solvents that produce the same results.

As you can see, these different production methods result in the same final product, but, in the case of alcohol and ice water extraction, don’t hold quite the potential for death that butane does.

And if you’re curious about the “other methods” on this list, two of the most common are CO2 extraction and hydrocarbon extraction (of which, butane is a member).

But, like butane extraction, these are extremely dangerous and are best left to the professionals and their very expensive (and SAFE!) equipment.

If you’re interested in a particular type of crumble wax (e.g., butane crumble wax, alcohol crumble wax, or ice water crumble wax), ask your local budtender for their recommendation.

Why Is Crumble Wax So Popular?

Crumble wax is popular because, as we mentioned earlier, it’s a concentrated form of the buds you buy at your local dispensary. And by “concentrated,” we mean really high in THC or CBD.

How high, exactly? Anywhere from two to four times over regular bud!

Depending on the original strain you start with, crumble wax can clock in at 50-90% THC (or CBD). Even the strongest strain you roll in your joint, blunt, or spliff only hits around 25%.

So, you can see why this type of concentrate such a big deal: You can get seriously high with just one or two hits!

How To Use Crumble Wax

Invest In A Dab Rig

The best way to consume crumble wax is with a dab rig. A dab rig is basically a modified bong that accommodates a dab nail instead of bud nugs.

To get your daba-daba-doo on, scoop a bit of your new favorite concentrate onto the nail. Then ignite your blow torch (yes, really) and put flame to nail.

From there, it’s just a matter of inhaling as much smoke as is physically possible.

As we mentioned earlier in this article, the hit from a dab of this stuff is A LOT more potent than your standard joint, blunt, Thai stick, or vaporizer.

That’s because the stuff you burn in a dab rig is concentrated canna-goodness. There are no plant matter molecules left floating around. And there are no impurities or additives to get in the way.

All that’s left are the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and trichomes — the stuff that gives marijuana the psychedelic and medicinal kick that makes us love it so much.

Bong That Bad Boy

Bongs and dab rigs are pretty much the same thing except that the dab rig has a nail and the bong doesn’t.

So instead of heating up the nail of your dab rig before taking your first toke, you’ll need to pack the bowl of your bong in a very special way.

Here’s how to smoke wax with a bong:

Find one or two nugs in your stash (or break them off a larger bud) that are slightly larger than the diameter of the downstem and insert them into the bowl.
Add a few small pieces of crumble wax.
Gather another nugget of marijuana from your stash, remove any seeds and stems and, while holding it over the bowl, rip it into small pieces with your fingers. The finer you make it the easier it is to pack in the bowl and the better it will burn. Alternatively, you can use a grinder to shred your cannabis before packing it on top of your crumble wax.
Fill the bowl the rest of the way with shredded marijuana.
Light up, puff away, and pass the bong around.

When you pack the bowl with wax in the middle, you create an oven-like effect where the wax vaporizes thanks to the burning ganja around it (e.g., at lower temperatures).

These lower temperatures preserve a larger percentage of the cannabinoids, allowing you to inhale more of the good stuff with a single breath.

Insist On Only The Best

When it comes right down to it, your crumble wax can come from any strain and be of any quality.

It can be headies, beasters, mids, or regs of Blue Dream, Chemdog, Yoda OG, Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, or any of the more than 700 existing strains.

The best crumble wax, however, comes from high-quality, organic buds.

For a truly righteous time, we recommend that you insist on only the best crumble wax made from a high-quality variety (headies or beasters) of your favorite strain. It will make the experience so much better.

Plus, with a good quality, organic strain — like those grown at Honest Marijuana — you’ll need less of the concentrate to experience the same psychedelic or medicinal effects. A little will go a long way.

You may have to pay a bit more for a high-quality crumble wax, but you’ll be much happier with how you feel when you use it.

If you live in Colorado, find some Honest Marijuana and discover what the purest marijuana experience on the planet feels like. You won’t be sorry.

We grow our plants the way Mother Nature intended: in organic soil without chemicals or pesticides. We even hand-trim our plants so that they’re organic from the ground up.

Not only does that make all your smoking, dabbing, and edible experiences infinitely better, but it also means that the crumble wax you burn in your pipe or bong is better as well.

So don’t settle for an inferior strain or an inferior extract. Get the best buds on the planet — Honest Marijuana buds — and experience cannabis and crumble wax the way it was meant to be.
